locations not to be missed during your stay on the island of Korcula.

Islet Proizd ~

At the entrance of a deep bay of Vela Luka, situated in a beautiful small island of Proizd - Magic Island! In 2007, at the option of the Croatian Tourist Board, the beaches on the island are for the most beautiful beaches on the Adriatic. Taxi boats to the island run only during the summer months, the departures are from the center. The trip takes a little more than half an hour drive to the bay where there is a bar and restaurant. In addition to this part, everything else is on the island naturally. The most beautiful beaches are on the other side of the island to the hiking trails lead. This magical island will surprise you with their colours and beauty, with its crystal clear sea, beautiful pebble beaches in rocky coves. Some of the bays are FKK. Proizd everyone wins with its natural beauty, its white beaches, turquoise sea, and the scent of salty freshness. The power of the sea, sun, and nature can be felt here in the true sense, and it is here that the entire beauty of a vacation in Vela Luka is completed. Enjoy the sun, transparent sea, turquoise waves, blue sky, and landscape of this island.

Korčula town ~

The town of Korčula is located on the eastern side of the island, built along its indented coast line. It consists of the old medieval town on a small, oval peninsula, a baroque suburb directly under the old walls, and new parts spread along the coast to the east and west of the old center. It is about 50 km from Vela Luka, and the city can be reached by car in half an hour on the fast road through the island. Take a trip to the town of Korčula and walk through the old town, the streets built in the shape of a fishbone, see Marco Polo's birthplace, and enrich your vacation for another wonderful experience. The beautiful medieval town of Korčula is definitely worth seeing.

Vela Spila ~

Vela Spila (Big Cave) is one of the most significant prehistoric sites in the Mediterranean and Europe. It is located on a hill above Vela Luka with a beautiful panoramic view of the place and part of the Vela Luka archipelago. A footpath leads to Spila, as well as an asphalted road. The "Blue Path" project is underway - the arrangement of the path to Vela Spila, which will be visible from space. Radiocarbon dating has shown that human activity in Vela Spila goes back 20,000 years. The archaeological material found provides evidence of the settlement of several prehistoric human communities that used the cave for everyday life. Thousands of ceramic fragments, whole vessels, and other objects found are finds of first-class importance. On them are written pages of cultural, social, spiritual, and economic relations of the users of Vela Spila with the near and far ends of the Adriatic and the Mediterranean. One part of the ceramics has the name Velolučka culture, because of the unique way of painting. The pottery found a few years ago is the second oldest pottery in the world (17,500 years old, belongs to the Ice Age). Croatian and international archaeologists work systematically on the excavations. With the research so far, they came from a depth of about 8 m, and the bottom of the cave has not yet been reached anywhere. So we expect many more exciting finds in this locality. In 1986, the remains of a ritual burial, two adults, were found. The analysis of their remains shows that they lived in the period of late Neolithic. Local people from Vela Luka call them Baba and Dida (grandma and grandpa). As part of the Cultural Center, there is an archaeological collection, with some of the artefacts found in Vela Spila.

Dubrovnik town ~

Dubrovnik is the administrative center of the count to which the island of Korčula belongs. Sung and described so many times, known all over the world, it is close to you now. The whole city is like a big museum. It is full of sights, galleries, events, concerts, and everything you see or touches its own history. It is visited daily by thousands of tourists from all over the world. Share with them the joy of the beauty of this city! From Vela Luka, it is easy to make a day trip to Dubrovnik.

Island Lastovo ~

For true lovers of nature and Dalmatia, it is worth visiting the island of Lastovo. You can explore the whole island in one day. A trip to the island can sometimes take you back in time; sometimes feel as the time has stopped! It is definitely recommended that you have a car. During the season, there is a ferry line from Vela Luka to Uble on Lastovo in the morning, and the return is in the afternoon. Another option is a private trip with a boat, where you get to know the island from a completely different perspective. In addition to natural beauty, special architecture, and a slow lifestyle (slower than the one we are used to nowadays), autochthonous vegetation, it is interesting for visitors to visit a couple of military facilities left over and build after the Second World War. This island will surely enchant you, and you will surely want to see it again!

Folklor sword dance Kumpanija ~

Kumpanija is a particularly attractive and physically demanding dance with swords, performed by men, and danced exclusively on the island of Korčula. The dance in the town of Korčula is called Moreška. In Pupnat (Moštra), Smokvica, Blato, and Vela Luka, there are companies with quite similar costumes and similar dance images. But we can say that it is an old knight's game that arose from the organized people's army that defended the island from various invaders in the troubled times of the past. The dance is accompanied by dialogues, playing the bagpipe and the drum. The dancers are dressed in old, rich costumes, and dance with real swords, insinuating a fight. Kumpanija is a custom that radiates beauty, patriotism, honour, faith, and a sublime desire to nurture and pass it on to new generations. It is the island's cultural heritage that must not die. In the past, the dance was performed exclusively during religious and national holidays. Today it is performed once a week during the tourist season. Take one evening of your vacation and enjoy this dance. The skill of the dancers will leave you breathless, filled with the pride and happiness of a free man!
